Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn | Review

I picked this series up because I had heard a lot of people talk about it on Booktube. (I know, I’m a terrible blogger who follows like 3 blogs, and spends the rest of her time watching YouTube videos). A lot of people compared this to Stranger Things, which made me even more interested in it. I can say that it definitely reminded me a lot of Stranger Things. This comic is set in the 80s, and the main character is  Erin, who is a paper girl in her town. She ends up running into a group of paper girls, and they team up to finish their routes after Halloween, and then weird things start happening. They witness people vanishing into thin air, they see pterodactyls and other dinosaurs mysteriously appear along with strange people called the old-timers. I really enjoyed this volume. The art is really great as well; there are a lot of muted and pastel colours that work really well […]

Insurgent by Veronica Roth | Review

Insurgent by Veronica Roth | Review

I’m finally working my way through the rest of this series so I can return them to my friend. I’ve been hoarding them for way too long. I enjoyed this book more than the first, but I think that’s just because it’s over the stage of setting up the world-building and characters. This book just gets right to the action. It picks up right after the simulation that closes out Divergent, and the whole book is basically the aftermath of that. Though now that I’m trying to review this book, I think my rating should be lowered. I read this book pretty quickly because I was enjoying it, but now I don’t really remember much of what happens, and I’ll probably have to look up a summary to be able to really talk about what happened. I’m going to post the rest of this review under a spoiler link, just because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. So, if […]

My Favourite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris | Review

My Favourite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris | Review

This book is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read. The art is absolutely fantastic, it’s really, really gorgeous. I’m going to insert pictures of the art and let it speak for itself along with my review. The book is set in the 60s, and our main character is Karen Reyes. She comes home from school one day to find that her upstairs neighbour, Anka, has died. Karen takes on the role of the detective, on the hunt for monsters, and Anka’s killer. She is really into terrible horror movies, and she sees herself as a werewolf. She is drawn as such throughout the book. Here are some of the beautiful illustrations in this book: All the illustrations were done by the author, Emil Ferris, and they really are what make the book so special. Not only is the story engrossing, but you also get to look at the art as well. The writing in this story is […]

2018 Bookish Resolutions

January 3, 2018     Marissa     Books   0 Comments

Hey guys! Here are my bookish resolutions for the new year! Hopefully, I’ll be able to say that I kept some of them at the end of the year! 1. Buy fewer books This is one thing that I really, really need to stick to this year. As of now, I have about 240 books that I own that are unread. This is due to my obsession with Booktube and Book Outlet. Ever since I found Booktube and Book Outlet I’ve accumulated way too many books, but this website basically enables bad book buying habits because books are so cheap and they sell out quickly. It’s a book lover’s dream. Seriously, go check them out but please buy responsibly. Anyway, the number of 240 is kind of starting to give me anxiety now. I used to enjoy having a lot of choice in my library, but now I just find it overwhelming. I want to lower this number substantially by the end of the year. […]

Last Half of 2017 Book Haul!

Hey everyone! So, I haven’t posted since I was home on reading week, and I had  promised that I had a lot of posts that I was going to publish before I went back to school. As you can see by the state of my blog, that didn’t happen. Anyway, one of the posts I wanted to publish was a book haul, but since it’s now the end of the year, you get a book haul for the last half of the year. These are all the books I’ve purchased from June to the end of December. I separated the list into novels and graphic novels. I bought 48 novels and 10 graphic novels for a total of 58 books in 6 months. I think I’m going to try to cut back on my book buying in 2018. More on that in another post though. Here are all the books! I included images, and a list. Novels: 1. The Comet […]

A Life Update and Currently Reading

October 23, 2017     Marissa     Books, Personal   0 Comments

Life Update: Hey everyone, once again I’m writing a post about why I haven’t posted in so long. If you’re new to my blog, I should probably tell you that I’m bad at making time for reading when I have other things to do. Actually, I think I’m just bad at reading in general. I definitely have a case of magpie syndrome. I get new books and instantly want to start reading them even though I have piles and piles of other books to read. This causes problems for my reading, but if I’m busy, this also causes problems for me. I had a job throughout the summer, but I thought I was going to be able to read a lot after work. That didn’t happen, but I did manage to read on my commutes to work. After working for the summer, I started my Masters at University, which has been a little hectic. I have so much academic reading […]

Moth Box Novel Edition, July 2017 | Review

Hey everyone! I received my July Moth Box in the mail a while ago, and it’s about time I wrote a review for you guys. I’m a bit behind in my posts, but let’s be real, I’m always behind. Anyway, let’s get into the review. If you guys haven’t heard of Moth Box yet, you should definitely check it out. It’s a bookish subscription box that was created by Mercedes, who you may know from her YouTube channel, which is called Mercys Bookish Musings. This box is now a monthly subscription with a bit of a twist. There are two different types of boxes available to purchase Every month, there’s either a novel box, in which you receive two novels, or a short story box, in which you receive two short story collections. All the books in the box are from indie publishers. You can check out the website here! This review is not sponsored, this is the fourth Moth Box I’ve […]

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell | Review

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell | Review

So, before I get into this review, let’s talk about reading habits, because you’ll need some context of why it took me soooo freaking long to read this book. If you look at my Goodreads progress for this book, you’ll notice that it literally took me 363 days to read it. This is not at all a reflection on the quality of the book itself, but rather an indication of my bizarre reading habits. I’m a terrible reader, I have book attention span problems. I almost always end up reading multiple books at once because I’m such a mood reader. I can start a book and really enjoy it, but if I’m suddenly in the mood to pick up another book, I will. This really just means that I start a bunch of books, make a some progress with each one, and then eventually just end up focusing on one. And the cycle repeats itself..  I basically have magpie syndrome when […]

The Handmaid’s Tale | Television Show Review

The Handmaid’s Tale | Television Show Review

When I heard that they were making this book into a television show I was instantly excited about it. It motivated me to read the book (granted, I didn’t start until a few days before the first episode aired, and I was still reading the book while I was watching the show. We all know I’m a terrible reader okay, let’s not dwell on the fact that it takes me a million years to read a book.) I finished reading the book and I absolutely loved it. If you’re interested in reading my thoughts on the book, check out my review of it here. Anyway, enough about the book, let’s get on to my review of the show. Like I said, I loved the book but something about seeing it onscreen just made it even better. Seeing the world of Gilead come to life and be made a reality through my television screen was all the more terrifying than the […]

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers | Review

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers | Review

I actually love this book so, so much. I heard a lot of people talk about this on booktube, and I really thought it reminded me of Fireflly. After reading, I can say that it does, and it doesn’t, in the best way possible. It reminds me of Firefly in that it features a cast of adorable and lovable characters who happen to live in space. It isn’t really a space-cowboy space romp at all. There’s more depth to it, in my opinion. Also, I must say that for a debut novel, this is absolutely amazing. She packed so much into a book that isn’t very long. It feels like you’re reading a lot more than what should be able to fit in 400 pages. Now, let’s get on to discussing this beauty. We first meet a woman named Rosemary, who is the newest member of the crew aboard the Wayfarer, a tunneling ship. Their job is to basically punch […]
