2018 Bookish Resolutions

January 3, 2018     Marissa     Books

Hey guys! Here are my bookish resolutions for the new year! Hopefully, I’ll be able to say that I kept some of them at the end of the year!

1. Buy fewer books

This is one thing that I really, really need to stick to this year. As of now, I have about 240 books that I own that are unread. This is due to my obsession with Booktube and Book Outlet. Ever since I found Booktube and Book Outlet I’ve accumulated way too many books, but this website basically enables bad book buying habits because books are so cheap and they sell out quickly. It’s a book lover’s dream. Seriously, go check them out but please buy responsibly. Anyway, the number of 240 is kind of starting to give me anxiety now. I used to enjoy having a lot of choice in my library, but now I just find it overwhelming. I want to lower this number substantially by the end of the year.

2. make more time for reading and read more books

I want to read more than I normally do this year. I don’t mean that I want to fly through books so I can read 200+ books in a year because that’s just not a realistic goal for me. With this goal, I mean I want to make more time for reading in order to read more books. My goal is 25, so that’s around 2 books a month. We’ll see if this happens or not, but I hope it does. I need to make more time for reading during the school year, and while I’m working in the summer. I generally don’t end up reading at all during the school year, and if I do, it’s like one or two books throughout 8 months.

3. Stop reading books I’m not enjoying

I don’t often give up on books if I’m not enjoying them. I will try to keep reading it, or put it down and come back to it later when I’m more in the mood again. I never usually say that I’m for sure not going to read something and completely give up on it. I’m going to set a new rule for myself this year. If I’m not enjoying a book after 50-75 pages. I want to stop reading it (dnf it), and spend my time reading something else that I’ll actually enjoy.

4. Get rid of books I’m not going to read or don’t like

This goes with the last one. If I’m not enjoying books or if I don’t feel like I’m ever going to actually read them, I don’t need them on my shelf. I’m going to sell them to a bookshop or donate them to my local library or charity shop.

5. Read a diverse selection of books

I want to read books by a wide variety of authors. I want to make sure I’m reading books across different genres, and not just stick to the same things all the time. It would be great if the authors themselves were diverse, and if there were diverse main characters in these books.

That’s it for my 2018 resolutions! I don’t want to set too many goals for myself just yet. I may add to this as time goes on. Let me know what your bookish resolutions are for the year in the comments!
