Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

I went to go see this movie on Saturday. I didn’t really know much about Wonder Woman before seeing this movie, so I was happy to learn that this is an origin story. This movie starts on the island of Themyscira, which is the home of the Amazons. We meet a young Diana, who is desperate to begin her training with the other Amazons. Diana’s mother is hesitant to let her start this training, which gives the impression that there may be more going on. We slowly learn more about Diana as the movie progresses. We learn about the story of her birth; her mother tells her that she wished for her so much, and wished for Zeus to bring her to life.

I really enjoyed learning about the Greek gods and their relation to the Amazons, as well as how the Amazons came to be. We learn that the duty of the Amazons is to protect the world, and defeat Ares, god of war. It is believed that Ares was killed by Zeus, but none of the Amazons are certain that Ares has actually died, and fear that he may return some day. We see Diana start her training, and watch her grow up and become a badass Amazon warrior. When a soldier’s plane mysteriously crashes through Themyscira’s barrier to the outside world, Diana learns of “the war to end all wars” that is raging in the world of man. She is determined to fulfill her duty, as she believes that Ares has orchestrated this war.

We see her journey to the world of man and leave her home. There are some pretty funny moments when Diana arrives in the world of man. A lot of things in this world are unfamiliar to her, which adds some comic relief to the story. The effects in this movie were awesome, they made the action scenes so cool, and it was awesome to see a woman doing the ass kicking. In terms of plot, there’s not a lot that happens. Diana goes to the world of men, and teams up with the soldier she saved, and a group of his friends who are willing to help them on their forbidden mission.  They are trying to kill Ares and stop the war, and we see all the action and danger that comes along with that. It’s more action based than plot based, which I like every once in a while. Plus, it’s a superhero movie, so that’s kind of the point of it anyway, right. Near the end, we finally find Ares, and I think these scenes are most fulfilling.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. I think it had a great balance of action, comedy, suspense, (and a little sadness at the end). If you’re a Wonder Woman fan, I think you’d definitely enjoy this movie. Let me know if you’ve seen it, and if you’ve enjoyed it. Let’s discuss in the comments!
