Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is things we’d like to see more of in books. Here is my bookish wish list!
1. More queer characters
While there are books that have been getting better with representation. I think we need more books about trans characters, bisexual characters, and ace characters. The fact that a character is gay should also not be the only thing that defines them. Just write a character and slip it into the conversation. Make it natural and not a big deal.
2. More disabled characters
As a disabled person who uses a wheelchair on a daily basis, I tend to stay away from books, movies, and television shows that involve disabled characters. This is because the characters are either portrayed as paralyzed and bitter about the fact that they’ll never walk again. I’m also tired of seeing the books where the character is pitied because of their disability. Just write a contemporary about this person’s life or something, and make their daily care routine seem normal.
3. More alternate history books
I absolutely love alternate history plots. I find it so interesting to read about, and it’s one of my favourite types of books.
4. Different historical settings
I love a good historical novel set in 1800’s and 1900’s, but I also love a contemporary historical fiction setting. Reading about the 60’s-80’s would also be really interesting. While I love reading books set in Europe that deal with royal families, or books set in WWI or II, I would also love books set in other places in slightly more recent times.
5. More fantasy/dystopian books without “chosen” characters
While I love a good fantasy/dystopian books, a lot of them centre around a character who has been chosen to save the world from a corrupt government or evil entity. Just write the story of the characters and life in this world, or a badass group of people that save the world (not a chosen character with a group of “sidekicks”)
6. More YA books without love triangles
I don’t really have anything else to say for this one other than: I HATE love triangles.
7. More books set on other planets
GIVE ME SPACE ROMPS! I absolutely love shows like Firefly, and I’m currently reading The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. This book just reminds me of Firefly, not because it’s a similar plot, but I just love all the different species. Give me more books about space and aliens.
8. More books about road trips/travel
Road trips are so fun, and I just want to live vicariously through people travelling all over the place having fun with each other in a car or on a bus.
9. More books about college students that aren’t “New Adult” genre
Please, please, please give me more books about college-aged students that don’t involve girls falling in love with guys instantly. Give me college students going abroad, learning about themselves, finding their passion, and coming into their own.
10. More books about the history of witches
I just find this part of history both terrible and interesting. I just want to read books set during the Salem witch trials.
That’s all for Top Ten Tuesday! What are the top 10 things on your reading wish list? Let me know in the comments, let’s discuss!
